Renuvion ® SkinTightening: What to Know Before Treatment

Loose skin can develop with aging, weight loss, pregnancy, or changes in body composition. Healthy habits and strength training can improve overall shape and muscle tone, but they cannot always tighten skin that has lost elasticity.

Renuvion® is a minimally invasive procedure designed to contract soft tissue beneath the skin. It may be an option for appropriately selected adults who want greater tightening than a noninvasive treatment may provide but do not necessarily need or want a larger skin-removal surgery.

What Is Renuvion?

Renuvion is a medical device that combines radiofrequency energy with helium gas to create helium plasma. During treatment, a trained medical professional places a slender handpiece through small incisions and passes it beneath the skin.

The controlled energy briefly heats the tissue under the skin, causing it to contract. The goal is a smoother, firmer appearance as the treated area heals.

Renuvion is sometimes called J-Plasma, but patients should ask exactly which device and handpiece their clinician plans to use.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

The Renuvion APR handpiece is FDA-cleared for subcutaneous aesthetic procedures to improve the appearance of loose skin in the neck and under-chin area. It is also cleared for coagulation of soft tissue beneath the skin following liposuction for aesthetic body contouring.

In clinical practice, Renuvion may be discussed as part of a personalized contouring plan for areas such as the abdomen, waist, back, arms, or thighs, particularly when combined with liposuction.
 

Renuvion With Liposuction

Renuvion and liposuction perform different jobs:

- Liposuction removes localized fat.
- Renuvion contracts soft tissue beneath the skin and does not remove fat.

When used together, liposuction can improve shape while Renuvion addresses some of the tissue looseness that may remain after fat removal. Renuvion does not remove a meaningful amount of fat by itself, and it is not a weight-loss treatment.

What Happens During the Procedure?

Your treatment plan will depend on the area being treated, whether liposuction is included, your health history, and your providers technique. In general:

1. The treatment area is marked and cleansed.
2. Anesthesia or numbing medication is administered based on the procedure.
3. Small access points are made in the skin.
4. The handpiece is carefully passed beneath the skin to deliver controlled energy.
5. If liposuction is included, unwanted fat is removed as part of the same treatment plan.
6. A compression garment may be applied afterward.

Procedure time varies according to the number and size of the areas treated.

What Is Recovery Like?

Renuvion requires 6-8wks of healing time. Swelling, bruising, tenderness,firmness, numbness, and temporary unevenness can occur. Small amounts ofdrainage may also be expected when the treatment is combined withliposuction.

Many patients return to light daily activities within 24-48 hours, but recoveryvaries. More extensive procedures may require additional downtime. Compressiongarments are often recommended to control swelling and support healing.  

Patients should follow their individualized instructions regarding bathing,garment use, medications, exercise, massage, and follow-up visits. Strenuousexercise and heavy lifting may need to be limited until the provider confirmsthat healing is progressing appropriately.

When Will I See Results?

Some tightening may be noticeable once early swelling improves, but the finalresult does not appear immediately. The treated tissue continues to settle andremodel over the following months.

Results vary with age, skin quality, the amount of looseness, treatment area, weight stability, healing response, and whether liposuction is performed. Renuvion may improve mild to moderate laxity, but it cannot reproduce theamount of skin removal possible with an abdominoplasty, arm lift, thigh lift,or neck lift.


Who May Be a Good Candidate?

A potential candidate is generally an adult who:

- Has mild to moderate loose skin or tissue laxity
- Is at or near a stable, healthy weight
- Has realistic expectations
- Is healthy enough for a minimally invasive procedure
- Does not smoke or is willing to stop as directed
- Can follow recovery and compression instructions

Renuvion may not be the right choice for someone with a large amount of hanging skin, significant medical risk, unrealistic expectations, or a condition that interferes with healing. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, uncontrolled diabetes, active infection, bleeding disorders, certain implanted electronic devices, and some medications may affect candidacy. A complete medical evaluation is essential.

What Are the Risks?

Renuvion is a medical procedure and carries risks. Possible complicationsinclude:

- Pain, swelling, bruising, or prolonged tenderness
- Burns or thermal injury
- Infection
- Bleeding, hematoma, or fluid collection
- Scarring or changes in skin color
- Numbness, altered sensation, or nerve injury
- Contour irregularity, asymmetry, or an unsatisfactory cosmetic result
- Delayed healing or tissue injury
- Air or gas collecting beneath the skin or in other parts of the body
- The need for additional treatment or corrective surgery
- Anesthesia-related complications

Serious complications are uncommon but can occur.

Seek urgent medical care after treatment for chest pain, shortness of breath,fainting, confusion, rapidly increasing swelling, severe or worsening pain,heavy bleeding, fever, spreading redness, drainage with a foul odor, orsignificant skin discoloration.

Is Renuvion the Same as a Surgical Lift?

No. Renuvion can contract tissue through small access points, but it does notcut away a large amount of excess skin. Patients with advanced laxity mayachieve a more predictable result from surgical skin removal.

The best procedure is not simply the least invasive one. It is the treatmentmost likely to safely achieve your goal. During your consultation, yourprovider should explain whether Renuvion, liposuction, a combination treatment,or referral for a surgical lift is the most appropriate option.

Renuvion may help improve the appearance of loose tissue in carefully selectedpatients. It uses radiofrequency energy and helium plasma beneath the skin andmay be performed alone for certain cleared indications or following liposuctionas part of a body-contouring procedure.
